Put a new battery in her today and lo and behold, she runs! And Drives! It would seem that the rear brakes are a bit sticky, especially when backing up, and the clutch may need some adjustment, but as a whole she’s as sweet as a peach. I’ve got new tires & a carb rebuild kit on the way, and hopefully the brakes will just be a matter of adjusting the rear drums. As long as my luck holds out, she’ll be back on the road in time to take her to the Red Barn Spectacular at the Gilmore Museum in a couple weeks.

Still looks great!

I’m also still extremely jelly.

This is the first post I’ve seen about this car. I don’t know where you got it, or its provenance. That said - have you checked the frame? I recall warning one of my buddies off a KG back in the 90s because of that issue. Not to be a jerk, but I always worry for everyone’s safety.

Thanks! Thankfully, it seems to be one of those rare cases where the deeper you delve into the car, the better it gets.

Yup, very thoroughly. The chassis is as clean as a whistle!

As for airbags, you’re going to have to settle for seatbelts only.

Haha, I’m sure it’ll be rewarding to work on.

Do you plan on doing the majority of the work on it yourself?

Gorgeous! I’ve always loved the Karmann Ghias.

No shoulder belts?

And the fact that it is a hardtop means a stronger structure. And that said - I remember sitting in a new one at a VW dealership when I was a tiny kid and thinking it was cool.

That museum is a great place to show it.

Shoulder belt on the driver’s side only. It’s a second car anyways, so it’s not going to see nearly the miles of my DD, and almost none of the traffic.

That’s my thinking, too. The Red Barn Spectacular in general is just a fantastic show and easily my favorite of the year. Well over 1,000 cars, and a pretty wide variety too.

Wow - VW to the core. I admire the dedication. The only VW I ever owned was an ‘84 Jetta Turbodiesel - essentially a Rabbit with a trunk. Loved that car.
